It was our fourth date, and Hank invited me to a rooftop bar in Leicester Square. The view was stunning, and the vibe was perfect. By this time, I already knew Hank liked me—he texted me every day with sweet compliments like “cute” and “pretty.” While I was interested in him too, I wanted to take things slow, meeting once a week and letting the relationship develop naturally.

In Japan, relationships often start with a clear confession. Someone says, “Would you be my girlfriend?” and the relationship officially begins. But I wasn’t sure how it worked in Europe. Were we still just dating casually? Was I his girlfriend already? I had no idea what stage we were in, and I was too shy to ask.

Enter the Random Stranger

After a couple of drinks, we decided to take a photo together against the beautiful skyline. While we were fumbling with selfie mode, an older couple passed by. The woman offered to take our photo, and we happily handed her the camera. Then, out of the blue, she asked, “Are you two boyfriend and girlfriend yet?”

This question caught me off guard, and I looked to Hank for his response. I was hoping he’d confidently say, “Yes, she’s my girlfriend.” Instead, he hesitated and answered, “Maybe.”

The Turning Point

Hank’s answer left me a bit confused. While he later explained that he didn’t want to rush me or scare me off, the woman’s question planted a seed in my mind. It made me realize that I wanted to be his girlfriend. I’d been holding back out of caution, but in that moment, everything became clear.

A few days later, Hank finally asked me to be his girlfriend. I’d gone out with a group of Japanese friends, and he came to meet me outside the bar. We walked to Tower Bridge, and under the city lights, he nervously popped the question. Of course, I said yes. I’d been waiting for him to ask, and it was such a relief to finally make things official.

Reflecting on the Role of Fate

Looking back, we often wonder how things might have unfolded if that stranger hadn’t asked her bold question. Maybe we would’ve become boyfriend and girlfriend eventually, but it could have taken much longer. It feels like destiny that she crossed our path that day.
